"The Rainforest Bunch" by Dottie
I was running through the vines hoping for the jaguar to stop chasing me. He was so close I could hear his claws digging into the soil as he ran. I found a little closed in area surrounded by vines. I dived in just at the nick of time! This is how I got there. I was reading on my porch when I saw rustling in the grass. I felt the grass around me. Suddenly, a little lizard jumped onto my lap. I could tell it lived in the desert. I walked to a bridge that was supposed to lead to a desert, but it led me to a rainforest instead.
When I was sure the jaguar ran away, I took a little walk with my lizard. I saw a family of wild pigs trot past me. A tapir ran by chasing a spider. I could hear leaf-litter crunching under my feet. I felt sweat dripping down my neck.
My mouth was dry and my stomach was grumbling. I needed to find food. I looked up in a tree and found coconuts. I cracked one open and used the coconut as a bowl. I collected more fruit and put them in the coconut. Yum! Then I realized I needed somewhere to sleep for the night. I wove lianas and sticks together. I sprinkled leaves on top and laid down. The lizard curled up right next to me. Good night rainforest!
I woke up the next morning and heard a SQUAWK! I crawled outside my hut and saw a macaw lying at the roots of a tree. I brought it back to my hut. I picked a leaf and wrapped it around the macaw’s head. When she opened her eyes I said, “I’ll name you Scarlet.” She had beautiful rainbow wings and a shiny yellow beak. She had brown talons and green eyes that sparkled. Somehow, I could understand Scarlet! She said that her nest fell from the understory and she needed parts to rebuild it.
Scarlet the Macaw, the lizard, and I went off to find parts for Scarlet’s nest. The lizard found some fluffy leaves. Scarlet found some twigs. I scraped the shell off a coconut for padding. All of a sudden, I saw a police helicopter. Scarlet sprung into action. She bit a liana vine and landed on the ground.
“Hop on!” she said. We flew up and up and up. Scarlet waved the liana vine. The helicopter saw us!
“Yes!” I shouted.
Scarlet kept flying and we all got into the helicopter. Safe at last!
